Over at Big Think, Peter Lawler has an interesting secular article on the recent trend to re-define marriage in terms of radically individual voluntarism - that is, defining marriage as a "contract" by an individual, to whom "society" must grant the freedom to marry whoever they want (= voluntarism), and if they don't get that freedom, they're being "oppressed".

I hate to be devil's advocate, but I actually don't like this article because he doesn't clearly state what he thinks. I think that part of the problem with the divorce rate (and formation and breaking of de facto relationships) is specifically that we don't as a church say what our position in relation to marriage and divorce is. We leave people to figure that out on a case by case basis lest we offend anyone.
